Winter chickens.
This is the time of year when we all get concerned about our pets and chickens in the back garden are no exception. This is a photo of my lovely Poppy and after a few moments wondering what on earth had happened ,like the other two she was fine as their feathers fluff up and act like a little duvet .
Last year was the first winter and I was a complete novice not knowing what I should do ..But we all survived…. Here are a few tips. Read the rest of this entry »

Chickens pickings .
I have been away from here for so long I feel quite guilty ! It has been such a hectic year but a great one but now I feel it’s time I returned to this blog as so much has happened.
I have had the lovely chickens for 15 now months and they have changed our lives for the better .would I like to be with out chickens in my back garden now? No way!
I am concerned though that I keep hearing that it is now the fashion to have chickens in the backyard. We took a lot of thought and years planning the right way and time but I know of people that have decided to have chickens and found that although they are easy to look after they have gone off the idea after a few months ,thinking that they are just egg making machines ,they are more than that they are more like pets and deserve to be treated with love and care just like a dog or cat.
Many of the coups people buy are fine but the run that comes with them are too small for them to stay in for any length of time. We built a walk in run that gives Clover,Poppy and Rosie plenty of room to roam around if we are not around.Otherwise they roam around in our very small garden .Much more interesting than flowers.
HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE PICTURES.

Eggs & more eggs
It is now over 2 months since we had our chickens and I never realised how many eggs we would have !We have had over 100 eggs of which 4 have been double yolks.
We were told when they came to us that it could take a few weeks before they settled down and started laying . Low and behold we had our first egg after 5 days.
Hen fever
They have taken over! I live breath and think chickens.
I would never have thought 2 months ago that things would have changed in my priorities so much.
The three girls and I have become confident between us and they know exactly when I’m due home from work I am sure as they are waiting to be let out from their walk in run to forrage around in the garden as they wish.Their eggs have got bigger , the smallest chicken poppy , her eggs were the smallest at first at about 48 grams they are now on average 56 grams.I must be doing something right as this is a great learning curve.
Photo time I reckon, so here goes

The chicken venture
It is a few weeks since I have written on here , as chickens have taken over my life. We have 3 chickens which have settled in beautifully. There are 2 Ginger rangers and 1 Miss Pepperpot. I thought perhaps they would take a time to settle in but they have made their pen and coup a home from home.
I have never had a pet in my life but after growing our own vegetables and trying to live a “good life” chickens seemed the next step.It was after a few glasses of wine one Sunday evening that my husband said “If we don’t do it now we never know if we could have “…Before I knew what had happened I had ordered a coup.
